There are innumerable unique places to visit during the last month of 2022. Whether you’re hoping to unwind in a warmer environment to avoid the savage winter chill, seeking an adventure-filled cold weather holiday, or maybe something in between, here is a list of some choices to visit in December.

Santa Fe, NM

Santa Fe in December means bringing a jacket. The city’s semi-arid environment and elevation of 7,000 feet keep winter temperatures cold but tolerable. As tourists wander the streets of Santa Fe, Spanish for “Holy Faith,” they can anticipate a clear sky. People who value art, engineering, and design are drawn to the city’s fascinating history and distinctive architecture. No other U.S. city has as many earthy, adobe-brick structures. Visitors can purchase magnificent turquoise jewelry and other delightful items at some of its many local shops, including Sunwest on the Plaza and Hyperclash. One of the main events the city hosts throughout the holiday season is Santa Fe’s Indian Market (SWAIA), which takes place during the weekend of December 3–4.

Santa Barbara, CA

There are many natural beauties in the Golden State, but few are as spectacular as Santa Barbara’s magnificent coastline. Visitors may take advantage of the city’s mild winter in December by visiting one of its wide, sandy beaches and admiring spectacular sunsets. Several farm-to-table eateries and world-class vineyards are about an hour north of Los Angeles. Visitors can stay at Drift Santa Barbara, a 45-key boutique hotel with floor-to-ceiling windows where natural light and breezes from the coast are abundant—feeling joyous? Visitors may see the 36th Annual Parade of Lights on December 11 as the city’s port is transformed into a winter paradise. Additionally, the time of year is ideal for seeing the return of migratory gray whales in the Santa Barbara Channel.

Atlanta, GA

Nashville is home to more than just popular country music and famed hot chicken. In addition to those notable (and delicious) attractions, the city also has a thriving art and cultural scene. Visitors may satiate their appetite for history and cultural enlightenment by visiting art galleries and museums that cover interests. While it’s a well-liked destination all year round, the Christmas season is special. December is a fantastic time to see the city covered in a million sparkling lights because of its warm winters. Holiday-themed activities and attractions abound, including snow tubing, ice skating, carriage rides, gingerbread creation, and an extravagant light show. Seeing live music is a necessity while in Music City, so visitors should try to catch a Christmas performance by country music icons at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium. Afterward, indulge in warm handmade drinks at Bobby Hotel’s Rooftop Lounge, where you can rent a heated igloo and enjoy a stunning 14-story view of downtown Nashville.

Boulder, CO

Boulder, just 30 minutes from Denver, is a popular December vacation spot for a good reason. Surprisingly, accommodation costs are at their lowest, and there is little snowfall, which is ideal for winter trail trekking. Although Boulder is well-known for its outdoor activities, it is also a thriving urban paradise with a wide variety of outstanding dining choices. Boulder’s culinary culture deserves praise, with options ranging from opulent restaurants like Flagstaff House with magnificent mountain vistas and locally produced cuisine to more relaxed eating establishments like The Attic Bar & Bistro. Another appeal is the setting for the arts and culture. Visitors and residents alike may enjoy musical performances by students and top professors from December 3 through December 5 at the CU Boulder Holiday Festival, a long-standing tradition.
